Choosing The Child Custody Arrangement That Is Right For You

Gone are the days when child custody arrangements were almost always one-hundred-percent in favor of the mother. In the past, it was virtually impossible for fathers to be granted custody of their children, or even have child custody arrangements which seemed anywhere near fair. Today, it is much different. Today, you have options.

Child custody arrangements do not have to be an all-or-nothing situation. While the focus has turned to fathers' rights, the best child custody arrangement places the emphasis on the child's needs. This means that depending upon your family's personal situation, it can result in sole custody or joint custody.

While each child custody case is different, a number of factors are usually taken into consideration. These factors include, but are not limited to, the parents' income and work situation, the home you can provide for your children and the amount of involvement you can have in your child's everyday life.

Whether you wish to share custody with your soon-to-be-ex spouse, or whether you believe that retaining sole custody of your children would be in your youngsters' best interest, being able to present yourself as a positive custodian is the best course of action. In other words, you must be able to present what you have to offer to your children. This will give the court the information it needs to decide that the custodial arrangement you want will benefit your youngsters.

If you have not put much thought into the particular type of custodial arrangement you want, now is the time to start. While the courts usually do attempt to be fair, they can easily overlook important facts if you yourself do not present them.

The most important point to consider, and to keep in mind, is that child custody is a very serious issue. The arrangement that is made will affect both you and your children for the rest of their lives. This is why it is never too soon to consider your options, and put careful thought into what you decide you want. The custodial arrangement will be the foundation on which you build your children's futures.
